A Video Look-back...at 1982: Julie Moss's
epic Ironman Hawaii finish
Just for ekicks, we're going to revisit some triathlon highlights
each month with a look back at a triathlon blast from the
past. To start us off, here's a recall of Julie Moss's 1982
Ironman Hawaii finish. Julie's incredible struggle was one
of the pioneering efforts of Ironman exploration, a test of
a human's ability to endure and continue on against mighty
physical difficulties.
The footage below kick-started thousands
of Ironman athletes to the finish line...

Little known fact: Six-time Ironman winner Mark Allen
was inspired to take part in Ironman racing after witnessing
Juli's finish -- and ended up marrying (and eventually divorcing)
Julie some years later.

7-Feb-2009 Triathlon Nutrition
Wrapping
up a long trip to Asia, ironguides Head Coach Marc Becker
presented a two-hour seminar at The Bike Boutique on Nutrition
for a Healthy Triathlon Lifestyle. During the talk Marc
explained some of the lesser known aspects of healthy nutrition
for athletic performance, including the relationship between
insulin and human growth hormone, and took a look at how Age
Group athletes in particular are vulnerable to the catabolic
effects of hasty nutrition choices.
By examining the general lack of protein in the typical Age
Grouper diet, over-reliace on carbohydrates, poor timing and
portion deployment, and the catabolic effects of sleep deprivation,
stress levels and busy work and travel schedules, Marc explained
how you can feel better day to day and improve your triathlon
performance with better daily, pre-race, race day and post-race
nutrition.
And of course no triathlon nutrition seminar is complete
without a few "secret performance tips", including:
How to tell immediately when you need salt on race day,
or if you need more water instead (and no, it's not about
salt stains on your shorts)
How to balance nutrition and hydration needs and the constraints
you face in doing so
Why poor race nutrition strategies can leave asthmatics
susceptible to attacks on race day
And a few more gems to aid your triathlon performance!
If you want to hear more about ironguides' proven Triathlon
Nutrition strategy, skype into our Method Coaching Call on
January 10 at 20:00 EST. More

Coach Vinnie looks at the Off Season: Celebrate
the sport with a fun challenge!
You've trained and raced hard all year, and as we approach
Christmas and New Years Eve, not only you should take a few
weeks of unstructured training as a mental and physical rest,
but try also celebrate our sport in a fun and different way!
Following up Steves great article about planning ahead
for the off season, apart from doing some cross training,
one way to keep some fitness and yet have a mental and physical
break is to set some fun challenges to be done by your self,
with your family or training buddies at special places and
times...//...here are some ideas for each discipline:
Swim: 100x100 -- If you are a beginner triathlete, invite
some training buddies and do a relay, each swimmer can do
25x100.
Coach Steve: Strength training for triathlons
(Parts 1 and 2)
This
topic is one that creates all sorts of discussion especially
as we approach the off season. It is one concept of training
that is very important to the success and longevity of the
halthy Age Gropu triathlete.
The term "strength training" is often misunderstood
in many endurance sports - especially triathlon. How can we
define the term "strength training" and how does
it applies to our sport of triathlon?
From a sports specific direction it means "essentially
preparing the muscle for sport (triathlon for us)." Some
key points to consider when discussing training for strength
in triathlon:
The average adult over 35 years old on average loses
about 1% of relative strength per year unless some sort
of strength work is done to slow down that process.
Ask Dr. Ryan! about: Caffeine
and racing: Friend or foe?
Weve
all felt that jittery, anxious feeling after drinking a strong
shot (or two) of espresso. Your heart rate revs up, your senses
seem a bit sharper, and youre feeling slightly wired.
But does this feeling of increased awareness actually benefit
us when it comes to racing?
Caffeine is the most commonly consumed drug in the world.
Its inexpensive, medically safe, socially acceptable,
readily accessible, and legal. Its affects include stimulating
receptors in the central nervous system and metabolic receptors
in skeletal muscle (causing glycogen sparing)... Read
