December 2008

To live an extraordinary life you must resist an ordinary approach.

At ironguides, we resist the ordinary approach to help
our athletes live extraordinary lives.

Freedom!!!

"Thank you ironguides for freeing me from slavery!"

Those are the words in a recent blog from Ironman Western Australia defending champion Charlotte Paul, who steps up to the plate as we write this to defend her title...

... feeling fitter and faster than ever -- as the above clearly shows! :-) (That's Charlotte field-testing the latest ironguides swag, created by none other than her very own jolly swagman, ironguides Australia Head Coach and hubbie Kristian Manietta.) Best of races right now, Charlotte and Kristian!

As the dynamic duo powers through the ultimate race on the 2008 Ironman calendar, the eKick has plenty of exciting news to share this month. New partnerships with global sponsors and races, an exciting new online social network, some fantastic results at Ironman Arizona, a happy triathlon celebrity stoked with his ironguides coaching results and a collection of blogs and articles from ironguides athletes and coaches.

Plus we take a look at the importance of core stability, Ironman nutrition from the pro's perspective,

Last but not least, the entire ironguides team expresses to all of you our gratitude and our best wishes for the incredible journey that has been 2008!

Thank you for your interest in ironguides, for your messages of encouragement, for your assistance and the appreciation you showed us. When you succeed, we succeed - Your Success is the foundation for our success:, your best is our business!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year -

May your 2009 be simply extraordinary!

  • Charlotte Paul, Port Macquarie Half Ironman -- Women's Overall Winnter; coached by Kristian
  • Luiz Renato Topan, Ironman Arizona -- 9:11, Winner M40-44, third amateur; coache by Vinnie
  • Barry Siff, 54/30 Race Director, Ironman Arizona -- 11:24, new PB by one hour 8 minutes; coached by Vinnie

I knew I needed a vastly different approach to my training to reach my goal of a low 11 hour Ironman, and I signed on with Vinnie Santana, a coach with ironguides, knowing that their approach is, indeed, “different.”It was an excellent move for me, and I knew it after 2-3 weeks. Consistency was the key, as was the continued emphasis on strength and, what I would call, “quality volume.”

It paid off...I went from 1851 out of the water, to 883 off the bike, to 586th at the finish. In my age group (50-54), it was 111 to 47 to 23rd … out of 135. Not bad. My overall time of 11:24:53 was my best Ironman ever by right around one hour.

I can’t wait to get back to training! The journey is so, so wonderful.
    - ironguides Athlete Barry Siff
, Race Director 54/30 Triathlon Series

"I wanted to let you know that I achieved my goals at Ironman Florida this November using your ironguides 20-week Ironman Training Plan, lowered my best time by 1 hour and 8 minutes, from 13:09 to 12:01. I should have broke 12, but that’s a long story. I came into the plan late, and still had good results, so thank you for the help."
    - ironguides Training Plan athlete Chet Miller, Ironman Florida

"First I though my coach Sergio Borges was crazy, asking me to do all those 25's, but in only 3 weeks I saw my 200yds time drop from 2:42 to 2:27 !!! Way to go coach !!"
    - Greg Sexton, 53, San Diego CA

"I feel stronger and faster than I ever did before!
    "
    - Sean Truchard, Las Vegas NV

A Video Reminder: Avoiding The Doghouse in 2009

It could be the wrong gift or it could be one bike ride too many....but sooner or later, if you're a triathlete in a non-athlete couple -- strike that, if you're a triathlete in any couple! -- sooner or later that extra lap, that extra mile, that extra repeat is going to land you in THE DOGHOUSE!

Let's remember that no man is an island, and that a strong support network of friends, family, colleagues and community members enables us to get to the finish line healthy and happy. It's not all about being fast.!

So have a peek at the below and remind yourself that happiness
is never built on splits alone.

In 2009, stay out of The Doghouse!

Keep your life in balance - training effectively frees you for a truly extraordinary life!

Coach Vinnie looks at Saving Your Workout: A little is better than nothing!

Sometimes you have to play the (bad!) cards you are dealt and make the most of it. Being short on time or energy for a workout is one of those situations.

There are virtually countless reasons that can make you miss a workout. Longer meetings at the office, bad weather, family commitments, traffic jams and the #1 reason, deep fatigue that make you procrastinate and when you realized you are only more tired or is too late to head out and complete the full set. But just as often, you can still “do something”, if you had a 90min bike ride scheduled, and you are left with a 40min window to train, MAKE THE MOST OUT OF IT! Read More >

Coach Kristian: Race Week Essentials

Race week always seems to fly in like an approaching tropical storm and go just as quickly. The next thing you know, your sipping coffee over breakfast with fellow competitors trading race day stories.

This should be a time of minimum stress but all too often we see athletes frantically running around wasting energy instead of being relaxed, calm, focussed and truly enjoying the race week experience. Read More >

Ask Dr. Ryan! about: The Core Issue

We’ve all seen someone use one of those overgrown beach balls at the gym, right? Perhaps you’ve wondered why they are using it. Or, maybe you’ve seen someone holding a push-up position for what seems like forever, but they never actually do a push-up.

Chances are these athletes are focusing on strengthening their core muscles.... Read More >

ironguides Athlete Blog, Emma Bishop: Training Made Easy!

Six weeks deep into my Ironguides plan the daily sessions are now etched in my mind. I know what I am supposed to do and when and why and how long for.

It’s not because the plan is boring, that could not be further from the truth. No, the plain and honest fact is, it’s SIMPLE.

ironguides Athlete Blog, Charlotte Paul: My Ironman Nutrition Plan

I want to share my race day nutrition plan.

Many people have helped me in the past and I'm now at the point where I don't have any stomach problems and my energy levels are great. We put too much time and energy into these races for them to be ruined by nutrition mistakes. So I wanted to share my wisdom! Read More >
