The Building Block of Success: Part II - Desire

This installement of The Inner Game looks at that most powerful of emotions: Desire. Without it, what can you hope to achieve?

Desire is the first emotion that arises when we seek to achieve anything. The strength to which we feel desire ultimately determines our level of accomplishment. No matter what the sport, in the winners’ circle you hear it said time and again that the winner “just wanted it more.” This is not coincidence or some throwaway line – desire is in fact the very driving force that lifts champions to the top of the podium. Experienced coaches know this and understand that when an athlete’s desire is primed, almost any training that athlete does will generate results. But when an athlete’s desire ebbs, no
training plan in the world will make a difference.

Weak desire delivers weak results.

If you truly desire your goal to the point that it becomes an obsession, then you’ll have no problems making the sacrifices to achieve it. In fact, you’ll come to understand the term “sacrifice” not as something that you give up to pursue your goal, but as something you are required to do in other parts of your life, but which takes you away from your goals. When your desire is in place, all else flows from it. You’ll find it easy to leave yourself no possible way of retreat from obtaining your objective. True, burning desire won’t let you rest until you have.
