Desire, dedication, discipline, determination and details are nothing if you approach the endeavour from the wrong attitude. Attitude governs whether or not you – your body, mind, spirit and emotions – will adapt to the extent required for you to attain your goals. The right attitude expresses itself as a “want to” instead of a “have to” and engenders a virtuous circle in which the five D’s feed off each other and power you forward. The wrong attitude, however, will conspire with the five D’s against you. Left unattended, it’s the wrong attitude that can leave you crushed by the sporting life, just as easily as it’s the right attitude that makes being a professional sportsman a great life.
How often do you hear "What a great attitude?" when somebody accomplishes something truly remarkable, or bucks the common trend to do the unexpected. Why do we act so surprised when this happens to be something positive?! A great attitude bucks the common trend. A great attitude fights the trend towards the lowest common denominator. A great attitude raises the bar, challenges the status quo to meet it...and leaves it behind, on its own terms.
A great attitude is like having a great set of sails - and the power to command the winds! A great attitude sets you up for success because it differentiates the gold from the glitter. A great attitude means the inevitable setbacks in life don't hold you back, but are transformed into the fuel to drive you ever forward. If all else fails and you hit a rough patch, focus on one thing and on thing alone: Try to return quickly to the perspective you want to take on life. Find your great attitude, and you'll find your self, too.
