Rocking The Method in the Offseason

ironguides athletes shine in their offseason too, such as in this weekend's Heel and Crank Duathlon where they earned two top-10 finishes, three age group wins and a huge 5th place in an ultra-competitive age group. Others broke big PBs, such as in the Marine Corps Marathon.

It was a great weekend overall for the ironguides athletes in Huntsville, Alabama.  These guys and gals made a statement with impressive performances in three different races.

Heel and Crank Duathlon
This year's edition of the Heel and Crank Duathlon showed everyone that cold, rainy and windy conditions are no match for a properly trained and motivated ironguides crew.

This group racked up two top-10 finishes, three age group wins and a huge 5th place in an ultra-competitive age group.

Sherry Stephenson put her training to the test with a win in the F30-34 age group. Her time of 1:16:24 is proof that concise, consistent training works.

Michael Stephenson, Sherry's husband, was able to place 5th in the M35-39 age group with a 1:09:48. He set a PR for the runs today and proved to everyone on the course that he could “ride it like he stole it”.

Ted Zingarelli dug down deep to win the M15-19 age group and finish 9th overall with an impressive 1:05:08. Ted showed great composure in dealing with a few unexpected incidents during the race. He is a perfect example of the confidence that comes from having faith in yourself and your training. His winter season will see him as one of the youngest competitors at the Mountain Mist 50km trail race.

Matthew Price put his engine to work to walk away with a win in the M25-29 age group and a 5th overall finish with a time of 1:01:55. Matt's raw speed and talent has rocketed him up through the ranks in only his first half season of multi-sport racing. He will be using the winter to enhance his already impressive skill-set by running marathons and ultra marathons.

Marine Corps Marathon
Jodi Bump and Donald Hellen made the flight to Washington, DC, for the Marine Corps Marathon.

Jodi has only been with ironguides for a few months but her PR of 3:57:39 shows the results that training with The Method produces. Jodi is a former competitive body builder and has run several marathons but found the 4-hour mark a tough nut to crack. We can't wait to see her performance at the Rocket City Marathon in December.

Donald ran a 3:39:10 fresh on the heels of an Ironman PR at Louisville. Most would not even consider doing a marathon so soon after an Ironman but Donald is a competitor through and through and has erased the word “can't” from his vocabulary.

XTERRA 15km Trail Run
David Gray and Ted Zingarelli toed the line at a cold and foggy XTERRA 15km Trail Run atop Monte Sano Mountain. The trails on Monte Sano are famous for their technical demands and brutal climbs. Elite mountain bike racers across the globe know that Monte Sano has some of the toughest single track around.

David Gray made his first appearance as an ironguides athlete and posted a 1:46:41. David's time does not reflect the limited amount of time that he has had to spend on these technical trails. This was a great way to fit a demanding workout into an already jam-packed schedule that includes duties as a father and surgeon.

Ted Zingarelli decided to do his long run with 200 others on the trails. His time of 1:34:39 was impressive on its own and even more so when you consider his age group win at the Heel and Crank the previous day. Way to go Ted.

At the Austin 70.3 in Texas ironguides athletes posted more great results. Amy McGrath finished 2nd in her age group, only two weeks after racing Ironman Hawaii. Glynn Turquand finished 9th in his age group with a fantastic time of 4:43.

In Arizona, the SOMA half Ironman was on the calendar. This race takes place on the same course as Ironman Arizona coming up in November so it was a good test for our athletes who are aiming to compete there too.

Rookie and very busy lawyer Edwin Astudillo went 4:50 in his first attempt on the distance.
Professional athlete Jozsef Major was 2nd overall with only two weeks of training after he had a serious bike crash five weeks ago. Despite a broken hand, broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder, he did pretty well huh?

Monica Gabourel, who is preparing for Ironman Arizona, set a PR on the bike and finished with a great time of 5:33, right on target. Alex Gigglberger also finished in 5:34 showing that he's serious for his Ironman Arizona this year too.

The Big Kahuna half Ironman in Santa Cruz, California, unfortunately turned into a duathlon. That did not help ironguides athlete Jennifer Wong who has a swimming background. Even so, Jen set a PR in her bike time and finished strong in 5:49.

In Australia at the ITU Long Course World Championship ironguides athlete Jolene Wilkinson returned to racing as a Pro, on top of holding a fulltime job. In a very competitive field Jolene finished a solid 15th overall.
