Ironman West Australia drew 1232 athletes to Busselton this weekend. The average finish time was 12:24, with the fastest 8:14 and the slowest 16:45, according to the race website. All ironguides athletes beat that average finish time comfortably.
Bevan Colless, M35-39, finished in a swift 10:08. Vanessa Colless earned 9th place in the F30-34 age group, with a strong 10:50.
Bevan and Vanessa have targeted this race since coming to ironguides at the start of the year. This was Bevan's second Ironman after his debut in Vineman in August. He has a great swim and bike, setting him up for an excellent result. In Busselton, he succumbed to the heat on the run. As a heavier athlete (88kg) the conditions really played against Bevan on this day but he will be back and fighting for a Kona spot in the future.
Vanessa was starting this race very nervous for her first Ironman experience but really surprised herself with a strong swim and bike leading into a favoured discipline - the run. Vanessa continued to get stronger through the run and finished off a great race in 9th position in the very competitive 30-34 age group.
Georgina Ayre finished a solid sixth in the 30-34 age group with her 10:43 time.
Carlos de Guzman crossed the Ironman WA line in a strong 12:06. Carlos joined ironguides only nine weeks before this race and has been very committed to his training. We improved his nutrition straightaway and saw some very rapid weight loss. That allowed us to work more on his run in the lead-up to the race and the result showed: Carlos felt great out there and enjoyed the run, something he hadn’t experienced in his previous Ironman races.
Jerry Steele took a big chunk off his Ironman PB, finishing in 12:02 in the 45-49 age group. Bill Dobson, also in the 45-49 age group, completed his first Ironman in a superb 11:12.
In Phuket, ironguides pro athlete Czoke Balazs closed his 2009 season in style with a fantastic result in the race of legends as Laguna Phuket Triathlon has become known. Balazs took third place overall in a race where Beijng Olympic gold medallist Jan Frodeno crossed the line first. It has been a great few months working with Balazs and we are looking forward to taking the improvements we have made recently to Ironman next year, starting out with both the Ironman and 70.3 in South Africa.
ironguides age group athletes also had stellar performances in Phuket. Andrew Cotterril took 3rd place in the M25-29 age group. Chris Bray earned 3rd place as well in the M55-59 age group by setting a 12-minute PB. Neil Franks got fourth in the M50-55 category by completing the swim in a whopping 5-minute PB. Richard Ferre finished in a solid 3:12 - it's his first triathlon season. Stephane DeBaets took a fantastic 28 minutes off his PB. Julian Hudson finished in 3:07, a PB by 5 minutes. Markus Staas finished in a strong 3:39, in his second triathlon ever.
In Singapore, three ironguides athletes and one ironguides coach were among the 50,000 runners that took to the streets this weekend for the eighth Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon event which includes a marathon, half marathon, 10km and races for kids.
Bernard Sechuad finished his first marathon in a stellar 3:54, staying under that four-hour mark. Elvia Suryadi completed the race in a strong 3:52, which was a personal best time. She finished 13th in the F30-35 age group. Jeffery Foo crossed the finish in 4:45, pushing a wheelchair participant. Last but not least, ironguides coach Shem Leong raced home in a superb PB of 3:13.
