ironguides Athletes & Family Perform at Rocket City Marathon
Normal people would have shut off the alarm and rolled back over in bed when they awoke last Saturday morning. The temperature was in the low 30s (Fahrenheit) with high winds out of the south and there was a chance for rain and sleet. The conditions wouldn’t sound so appealing to most folks, but then again most folks aren't ironguides athletes!

In Huntsville, Alabama, ironguides put two groups of athletes on the course Saturday at the Rocket City Marathon. Of course, we had those that were racing. We also had a group that had the hardest job of the day, working aid stations in the cold and getting wet as they handed out fluids to competitors. It was one of those days where everyone would have been warmer if they had run 26.2 miles.
Donald Hellen knew that the fastest way to get out of the wind was to run a quick pace to the turn at 14.5 miles and get the wind at his back on the return. He ran a tremendous race and finished with a negative split for a final time of 3:22:45.
Jodi Bump put her training to use and also came to the realization that running without biking first is simply over rated. Her finish time of 4:07:41 was a great effort on this day. She simply refused to quit and kept moving forward.
Long-time ironguides supporter Judy Rudder set a PR with a 5:16:26. Judy has been on the course at every race throughout the past two years supporting and encouraging the ironguides crew. We were glad to return the favor on Saturday and run the last bit of the race with her. Judy told me that this was her favorite finish ever since she was coherent when she crossed the line.
Brenda McGovern had the hardest job of the day. She worked the aid station at miles 7 and 21. This insured that she would get wet early and stay wet all day. Three cheers for Brenda for toughing it out and supporting all of the runners out there.
