Hello from Sunny Singapore,
We had a fun-filled Open Water Swim / Run training session last Saturday. There was a strong turnout from ironguides athletes, track runners and friends. I conducted a skills-based open water swim and practiced lots of fast sprint starts off the beach, sighting and drafting drills, before finishing off with some strides and 1km run intervals.
It was a casual training session and everybody (including me) had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It affirmed me as a coach and reminded me how lucky I am to be doing something I like.
The vibe in the squad is growing. We had the Bike Time Trial two weekends ago, then this Open Water Swim, and this weekend I'm travelling up to Port Dickson to coach the athletes through the race and spread the ironguides word. Four of my athletes, and many other familiar faces, are racing. So we hope to get the support going.
The next session will be run interval training on the trails at a reservoir. It will be really fun.
Have a look at the pics (coming soon).
I realized a while ago that what the majority of the typical age group athletes in Singapore really want is to have fun while training in a group. So I have been putting my energies into growing the squad dynamics in a positive way and, while i'm barely scratching the surface, it's already met with lots of enthusiasm.
A new athlete joined yesterday - that's always nice!
Enjoy your training.
