With the demise of the Challenge Cape Town race a few months ago, many athletes in South Africa scrambled for their computers to enter the Jailbreak Triathlon that took place this month. The main race (2.2km swim, 88km bike and 22km run) was always going to be a hotly contested affair but the unpredictable weather in South Africa of late was playing on the minds of a number of people.

For Sally Waterworth this would be a true test of her preparations. Unfortunately the final phase of training had not gone according to plan due to a niggling hip injury, and the crash at a road cycle race did not help matters much either.

Despite the challenges, Sally knew that, come what might, she had given her best at preparing herself for the race. On a day that saw the athletes face early morning rain, 16 degree Celsius and 20km/hour winds, Sally was among the 400 athletes setting off on the swim. No sooner had she started and things were not going her way. Languishing way behind coming out of the water, she set off on the ride like a woman possessed and soon started to pass athletes one by one. She rode the challenging bike course in 2 hours 57 minutes.

The run was always going to be an unknown factor based on the injury. While the sun had come out, the wind had picked up. Having made up so many places, the desire to still do well was firmly etched upon her face. She bolted and ran a 1hr 54 split,  the 4th-fastest run time among women on the day. That earned her 5th overall in the women, and 3rd in the 30-39 age group. Her finish time of 5hr 52 was good enough for 42nd overall. For her first time at the distance, it's a result she can be super proud of.

In the shorter distance race (1.1km swim, 44km bike and 11km run) Marina Rust-Evans took on her first triathlon. She finished in 3hr 47.

At the monthly race in Port Elizabeth, Andrew Robinson continued his good showing by placing second in the Olympic distance race, with Willie Kruger coming 4th.

At XTerra Juiz de Fora/MG (1km/26km/6km) in Brazil, Rui Dieguez crossed the line in 2hr 46 which earned him a Top 5 spot in the M40-44 division. He had a well-balanced race with a solid performance in each of the three disciplines.

At Ironman 70.3 Canberra in Australia, Paulo Cezar Souza (M25-29) came home in 5hr 50 with a consistent run split (1hr 49).
