Part of the process we engage in when we take part in sport is the process of self-improvement. While it looks like all we need is physical training to achieve our goals, in truth the more we go at it, the more we begin to understand that what's really holding us back are mental and emotional patterns of thinking and reacting to the hurdles we encounter on the road to success. One of those hurdles is how we respond to setbacks and disappointments. [

We've mentioned before that we love getting fan mail...here's a kind letter from Florida cardiologist Dr. Lyndon Box, an ironguides Premium client since the autumn of 2008. Lyndon's attended ironguides camps in San Diego and in Portugal, and Ironman Austria in July 2009 was his first Ironman since switching to The Method. [

...Picture this, you're heading towards the finish line... it's hard to explain but somehow the hard work, sacrifices, discipline and all the little things that yesterday didn't mean much, now have real meaning. The emotions are overwhelming. You're just about to achieve the experience you've been chasing... aspirations, dreams that maybe at one time you thought 'not possible' .... are about to be realized...

One of our coached athletes asked us the following question:
What I view as my achilles heel is my mental confidence to just go for it. I want to have that internal feeling that I can go hard on the bike and then run well. How do I get that extra umphh! mentally? Do we need to do more bricks at race pace, back and forth from CT to treadmill? Let me know as I feel if I can just get over this hump(mentally) great things will happen.
Here's our answer. [

I recently read Michael Phelps book 'No Limits' and he mentions that one of his coaches (Bob Bowerman) favourite lines is "Attitude, Action, Achievement".
Phelps also goes on to mention about the times where he doesn't feel great but he believes he can still pull out a great performance.
We have all had times when we feel average and our training session or event turns into that. So how is it possible to pull out great performances in both training and competition?

It's great when a relationship with a new client start off with a new PB - without a training plan exchanging hands yet! Lyndon Box's half Ironman performance over the weekend as an example of how a qualitative approach can spell the difference between victory and defeat, and why for some personalities it also means the difference between joy and tedium.

Losing our best friend means grief and pain -- but painful times can also be an opportunity to confirm what really matters to us. Those who leave often leave behind valuable lessons for us to incorporate into our own lives.

As some of you know, I spent 10 days at the turn of the year in a Mindfulness Retreat in Thailand. This was a version of what is known as "Vipassana" meditation, a 2500-year old practise of developing wisdom and mindfulness in our daily living and approach to life. In a nutshell, the time was spent honing one's concentration with 12 hours of sitting, walking and swimming (!!) meditation daily, balanced with meals and several talks a day on aspects of developing wisdom, compassion and "loving kindness" as our natural disposition.
